The semifinal of the Under-18 competition between the Bay Marlins and Whangarei Boys' High School was a showcase for Northland talent, says Hector Davies, Northland Rugby Union's development manager.
Davies, a staunch supporter of up-and-coming players, wore a wide grin as many players shone from both sides during the Marlins' 23-16 win at Moerewa's Simson Park.
"There's plenty here that will go on," said Davies.
And the crowd would have agreed, entertained by the future of Northland rugby for the price of a gold coin.
Of note, he said, from the winning Peter Nock-coached side were halfback Kadin Te Nana and fullback Steven Pene.
"Kadin is absolutely outstanding. His clearance has been so precise and his carries with ball in hand have been great," said Davies.
Pene was doing everything right too - kicking brilliantly for space - and fierce when running and hitting the line.
"For Boys [WBHS], No.8 Simon Jones has played really well and open-side flanker Ben Berridge - those two are just all over the place ... real stand-outs."
Davies was impressed with the standard. "Close, plenty of quality and in good spirits, what more can you ask?"
With not long left on the clock, the game was all locked up at 16-all before Jarred Meehan's try won the match.
Nock also praised both teams for their skills, enthusiasm and efforts throughout the season.
"For me it was the entire forward pack that won us that one. If they can repeat it in the final against the Ninety Milers, up there, we'll go close," he said.
In the other semifinal, Ninety Milers were too strong for a good Kamo High School side, running out 43-10 winners.
