Rene Ranger has been named as the Taniwha captain for this season's ITM Cup, making himself unavailable for the All Blacks in the process.
Northland coach Derren Witcombe last night named Ranger as captain at the ITM Cup season launch, which coincided with the finals of the Bayleys Southern Districts club rugby competition.
Witcombe said that for personal reasons, which he would not go into, Ranger had made himself available for Northland this season.
Ranger spoke at the season launch of wanting to play another season with the Taniwha before he leaves for French club Montpellier at the end of the ITM Cup season.
The 26-year-old's announcment comes ahead of the All Blacks' team announcement for this month's four nations Rugby Championship.
