Rene Ranger remains a chance to retake the field for Northland this season after medical staff said his hamstring strain should only take two to four weeks to recover.
He was initially in doubt for the All Blacks' end-of-year tour to the Northern Hemisphere, after he left the field early in the match against Counties-Manukau on Sunday.
Northland coach Bryce Woodward said it was good news as far as the outside back's chances of making the tour went but as far as the team are concerned they would miss Ranger's talents.
"Four weeks is still the end of the season for us though, so we've got to be prepared for the worst," he said.
The severity of the injury means that Ranger could be available for the Tasman match on October 15 - two days before the Northern Hemisphere touring party is named.
Jared Payne will move into centre as he did on Sunday for the Taniwha, with Aden Dewes - returning from injury - likely to cover second five-eighth and centre, with Iwi Hauraki likely to come back on to the bench.
If Dewes passes a fitness test, the possibility of Brook Gilmore being called up into the senior squad now seems unlikely.
Gilmore was one of the stars in the Northland Development squad's 29-23 victory over Counties on Sunday. His midfield break set up Brock Mustard's first-half try which saw them hold Counties to 11-11 despite playing into a strong breeze.
Northland forged ahead with an intercept try to Gilmore and another to Ryan Barker to lead 23-11 before two Northland players were binned for ruck infringements, inviting the home side back into the game.
The score closed to 23-23 before Northland were restored to their full complement and two Mike Wiringi penalties settled the result and gave Northland the chance of a home quarter-final in the Northern Regional competition.
Joel McKenty also played 60 minutes with the development squad and will be available for the senior squad for this weekend's must-win match against Waikato.
