The golden boot of Daniel Lavalle saw North Force gain a crucial early lead against a highly rated Mt Albert Ponsonby side at Tikipunga Sports Park.
North Force hosted the second match of their double header yesterday , and backed up their 4-0 win against North Shore on Saturday to topple the visiting central Auckland side, 3-0.
The hosts came out firing, playing aggressive attacking football, and only five minutes into the match, midfielder Lavalle caught the opposition off guard, found the back of the net, and then repeated the feat only minutes later, to give his new side a handy advantage in the Northern Federation League first division match.
"That first 20 to 25 minutes was the best I've seen any North Force team play since I have been up North," coach Bruce Plunkett said.
"After that it was pretty even - there were two sides out there, who were pretty tired after playing two matches this weekend."
Mt Albert Ponsonby also played a double header and won comfortably 6-0 against Papakura on Saturday.
Both teams tussled for possession in the second half, and after 20 minutes, Sammy Oso finally got the breakthrough he had been looking for, and set up a clear shot for Keegan Baddely, who tapped the ball in and extended North Force's lead, which they held on to for the remainder of the match, giving them their third win of the season.
Heading into the match, the side expected to meet a tough outfit, and that prediction was correct, but the fatigued visitors failed to capitalise on their opportunities, plus rock solid defence from Jeremy Rintoul and Scott Burgess, and sharp goalkeeping by Leon Taylor.
Despite their loss, Plunkett still rated the side saying they were very tidy, and would be one of the performing teams in the competition.
North Force are on the road for their match, this Saturday, against Matamata. Meanwhile, North Force Reserves suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 4-1 to Mt Albert Ponsonby before the main game.
The injury plagued northern outfit was down six players, and coach Paul Herbert took to the field to make up the numbers but he offered to excuses for the loss.
"It's no excuse ... we had enough opportunities to at least get a draw but that's the way the cookie crumbles."
Murray Wootten scored the only goal of the match for the reserve team, who now have two consecutive byes.
"It will hopefully give our injured players time to recover," Herbert said.
FC Whangarei also had a double header this weekend, playing in the newly formed US1 Championship League. After an easy 4-0 victory over Waitemata on Saturday at Morningside Park, they met Warkworth yesterday , in their first away game of the season, at Shoesmith Domain.
Up against a physical Warkworth side, FC Whangarei right midfielder Gareth Webb stood out, scoring a hat trick to draw 3-3 with the hosts.
