Ruakaka trainers Dean and Donna Logan brought out their big guns for Saturday's Whangarei Racing Club meeting and it's fair to say their ammunition went off with a bang.

The duo not only dominated the nine race card with five wins, they produced the remarkable feat of training the first four horses home in the fifth event won by Free Serve.

While the latter achievement is not unique as South Island horseman Michael Pitman trained a first four home at a Riverton meeting earlier in the season, it is certainly a rare occurrence.

"It's really a massive team effort and Dean and I are fortunate to have such fantastic stable staff working with us," commented Donna Logan.

"Because of the good stakemoney on offer we did target this meeting with our team and to get the results was great."

Their day kicked off with Storm In coming with a powerful finish from well back to overhaul his rivals near the post in the Cowley's Hire Centre 1600.

"That was a huge performance," said Logan.

"He has come back so much stronger this time in and he at last looks like fulfilling the early potential he showed us."

From there the Logan's grin went to a smile when their charges Al Askan and Uncle Shayne quinellaed race four the Industrial Security Specialists 1600. However the event didn't go without some apprehension pre race as Al Askan bolted going around to the start and had to be checked by the vet before being declared a runner.

"An apprentice dashed past me in the preliminary and Al Askan just took off with it," explained winning jockey James McDonald.

"I tried to steer him towards the outside fence to slow him but he must have done some schooling at some stage because he was going to take it on!"

Al Askan eventually pulled up down the back straight.

"It was a gutsy win because they didn't go hard in front and he's had to come from a fair way off them and cover extra ground in doing it," McDonald said.

Donna Logan was rapt with Uncle Shayne's effort.

"He had been having no luck in this preparation so it was good to see him show some form again. He's going to be hard to beat at the next meeting here in a fortnight," Logan added.

As predicted by jockey Jason Collett, Free Serve won race five the Arts N Tartan Wearable Arts 1600 over stablemates Thorny Chick, Whistling Straits and Katya Grace.

"Getting the first four was just amazing," Logan said. "I think I was cheering for all four at different stages up the straight."

Free Serve has won twice this preparation and is a horse that should go on with the job.

"He's very honest and has come a fair way this time in."

Then Sir Lovesalot won the 91.6FM 1200 for the Logan's but not without having to dig deep to hold out Faraway Eyes.

"That was a really game win because I had to use him early to get across from the wide draw," said winning jockey James McDonald. "They slowed in the middle stages which helped but he quickened really nicely again when I asked him and showed fighting qualities when the other horse came at him."

The Logan's day was capped off with an impressive all the way win by Splitfire in the Fell Engineering Ltd 1400.

"She has just kept on improving this time in and will be a force to be reckoned with in that $25,000 fillies and mares final at Ruakaka at the next meeting." Logan said.

So have the Logan's got anything else explosive to produce at the next Whangarei meeting on July 14?

"There are a couple of new ones to watch out for actually and one or two from last Saturday's meeting that will strip fitter horses and be at their optimum racing distances next time so watch this space," Logan said.

Fiorano was impressive winning the feature event on the programme the Northland Copier Services Open.

He got shuffled back after settling in a good spot early but came with a determined finish to nab victory close to the post.

The gelding transferred to Moira Murdoch and Dominic Olsen's stable after injuring a tendon and Saturday's win came at his fifth raceday appearance for the stable.

He was earlier prepared by Roger James and had finished second in a Counties Cup.

Sarsarun's win in the Northland Vet Group 1400 brought up Pukekohe apprentice Alysha Collett's 100th riding career win.
