Her name means "my beloved one" in Arabic, and now Northland racehorse Habibi truly is her owners' beloved filly.

Habibi came out on top in the $750,000 TV3 New Zealand Derby, one of the country's most prestigious races.

After her win on Saturday, Habibi was due for some rest and recuperation with co-trainer Donna Logan saying Habibi would get some time to enjoy Ruakaka beach.

Habibi's win was no surprise to Logan because the filly was aimed at the Derby.

"That's the one I wanted and it's the one we settled for," said Logan. "Habibi's becoming quite the wanted lady.

"I was very relaxed, Vinnie [Colgan, jockey] was very relaxed, and she was very relaxed. Going into a race like that she should be wound up like a corkscrew, but she was there to do her job and she did it in style."

Habibi has taken the New Zealand racing world by storm this season with six wins from seven starts, her only loss a third placing two weeks ago.

"There have been a lot of people wanting to buy her. [But] they've [the owners] turned it down because they want her to be a New Zealand horse for the New Zealand people."

Since Saturday's race Logan's phone had been ringing off the hook. There were 87 text messages waiting after the race.

As a result of Habibi's win All Blacks legend Sir Colin Meads was looking at having a horse at the Whangarei Racing Club stables in Ruakaka.

"What it's done is put Ruakaka on the map. [The win] has shown people how good the facilities are, and with redevelopments scheduled it will be a massive advantage with more race days, trainers and jobs.

"Even the race day commentator, George Simon, was wearing a tie with our club's colours on it. He said he's a fan of ours and is a big supporter of what we do," said Logan.

Habibi is a supreme equine athlete. Logan said it was not uncommon for horses to lose around 10kg to 15kg after big race days, and after a race like the weekend classic it was more likely to be around 20kg. But, Habibi only lost 2kg.

"Habibi only lost 2kg, she has the constitution of an ox. She knows she's good, she acts like she's good."

Colgan, the jockey who now holds a modern-day Derby record of five wins, said he had never felt that he had made the wrong decision in opting for Habibi ahead of another of his regular quality mounts, Fix.

At the line half a length separated the two fillies, with a length and a half to second favourite Castlzeberg, who as anticipated ensured the race was truly run by setting a solid gallop.

Colgan's only concern came early in the race but the rest, as he said, was easy.

"She jumped well but kind of baulked, lost a bit of momentum across the junction. I thought I'd have been maybe a spot closer but where I ended up was the next best thing.

"We got a lovely run on the fence and when it came time to get off, I could see Fix ahead of me and I knew she would be the one to follow.

"She felt good all the way, really strong the last bit, but to her credit the other filly didn't make it easy. They're two very good fillies."

The Logan team also had Durham Town running in the Darley Plate on Saturday, with the smallest of margins preventing the double victory.

"Durham got beaten by 1/3000 of a second, beaten by the width of an A4 piece of paper."
