After breaking a 17-year semifinal drought, the Taniwha could go one step further and secure a home semifinal if results fall their way.

Northland first need to win their game, with a bonus point likely to help out if Hawke's Bay hold off Southland.

Taniwha fans should cheer for Southland in today's 5.35pm Ranfurly Shield match if the Taniwha are to have a shot at playing again at Toll Stadium.

However, Southland have the tough task of knocking over Hawke's Bay. For Southland, they must win to give them a chance at making the semifinals so they have plenty to play for - as if the Ranfurly Shield wasn't enough.

Bonus points may be enough to deny Northland the home semi, though.

If Hawke's Bay secure a bonus point win, then it's all over, but if not, it will come down to who beat who between them and Northland - provided Northland can secure a five-point victory.

The Taniwha are safe in the semifinals regardless of results, though. They can't overtake Manawatu at the top - after the Turbos beat Northland in round one, the Taniwha can only equal their total competition points - but the Shield changing hands could mean Northland are playing for home advantage tonight.

If tied with Hawke's Bay on points, Northland will go ahead.Cameron Leslie
