Waipu cyclist Fiona Southorn has started the track season in the best possible fashion, winning gold in the 3000m individual pursuit at the Para-Cycling Oceania Track Cycling Championships in Invercargill.
The 43-year-old New Zealand Paralympic Cycling squad member, who is eyeing a spot on the Paralympic team to go to London next year, showed her best at ILT Velodrome.
On Tuesday, Southorn qualified for the 3000m pursuit with a time of 3m 59s - beating her previous best time of 4m set in April at the UCI world para-cycling track championships in Montichiari, Italy.
Heading into Tuesday evening's finals, Southorn qualified fastest and was racing for gold, up against her Australian rival Claire McLean.
Feeling fresh, Southorn charged home in 3.57 - three seconds in front of McLean.
