Whangarei kickboxers proved worthy of fighting in the Princesses of Pain fight league, when they picked up top results at the Fawkesy Ladies tournament, in Auckland.
POP fight league - usually just for female fighters - features combative sports Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and Kickboxing.
Fight Fitness Whangarei entered fighters Stephanie Firth (Staffy), Telea Kask (Baby Face Assassin) and Morgan Webb - into Saturday's tournament for the first time, and were delighted with the outcome, with the trio cleaning up with two victories and a draw.
Sixteen-year-old Kask fought Thipphawan Sumprasoet from Auckland's ETK Gym and after three two minute rounds of Muay Thai, Kask took out the 54kg division with the majority of winning votes. Similarly, 19-year-old Webb, who fought in the sole male fight at the contest, was also judged the majority winner in his bout against Kupa Parker. Meanwhile, 14-year-old Firth aka Staffy fought well in her first novice Muay Thai fight, battling to a draw against "Indy" from Auckland's SMAC Gym, in the 65kg division. Fight Fitness trainers Erana Brown and Mike May said all three fights were tough. "They all had to work really hard against good fighters to come away with a win. And overall the hours, weeks and months of training prior added to their success," the trainers agreed.
Also competing at the event featuring 13 fights was Annaliese Wood, representing fellow Whangarei kickboxing gym Roundhouse Gym. Wood secured a majority win in her 62kg Muay Thai bout with Anneka Boss, from Ngakaunui Gym.
