Northland Polo Club has finally galloped home with the silverware.
At the season's closing tournament at Auckland Polo Club last weekend, Northland won the Brinks tournament.
The Northland club has played in both the New Zealand Open and the Saville Cup this season, where they were beaten but turned around in the final tournament for the season beating everyone.
"It was about time we stopped fooling around and won for a change," Northland Polo Club president Paula Geard said.
"We have had three seasons playing in tournaments down the line, where just being there to play as a team and having fun has been a great achievement. But now that the Taylors are back involved it's time to stop mucking around."
Former New Zealand polo player John Taylor has been the coached the club for a two years and now his son, ex All-Black Glen Taylor is back in the saddle.
Glen Taylor's last polo tournament was at the age of 18.
The Taylor family had the Tangiteroria Polo Club and have re-opened their field after 20 years.
"This has made a significant improvement to our polo, although playing at Barge Park was a great start, the field was too small to really get into the swing of things.
"Unless you are at full gallop, and riding each other off to get to the ball first, you are only getting half the experience," Geard said.
Geard said the Taylor brothers were still talked about around the New Zealand polo scene.
They won the Junior Saville Cup in 1970.
For Tangiteroria Polo Club, Bob Taylor had five sons, the winning Saville players were Les, George, John and Warren. Les and John are currently playing chukkas with Northland Polo Club at the Taylor's ground.
Players in the winning Brink's Tournament were Geard, Steve Beatson, Glen Taylor and Andrew Bleakley, an ex-professional player who played in New Zealand and Australia.
• The closing tournament for Northland Polo Club is at Bob Taylor Rd, Tangiteroria on Saturday. The Northland club members will be contesting the 1930 Nelson Polo Challenge Cup. Spectators welcome. Hit-off 1.30 sharp.
