TV talkshow host Dr Phil would be proud of North Force Reserves' goal setting strategy.
Under the direction of coach Paul Herbert, the team of promising footballers have set targets all season and most weeks, have managed to tick them off their to-do list.
On Saturday, North Force Reserves went up against North Shore at Tikipunga Sports Park and got another bullseye when they defeated the visitors 5-0.
"We reached a milestone on Saturday," Herbert said.
"Last year we only scored 27 goals all year, so we set the target of scoring at least 35 goals this season - and on Saturday we got our 27th goal, along with our 28th, 29th, 30th and 31st - and we still have five games to go."
Sammy Oso scored a hat-trick for the Reserves, while Connor von Keisenberg grabbed a double.
"We had two priorities for the match - one was to win, and two was to keep a clean sheet, which we did," Herbert said.
"North Shore had several opportunities to score, but the boys dug deep and were determined not to concede any goals."
To cap off what has already been a successful year for the Reserves, who finished at the bottom of the table last season, North Force moved up to third place behind Glenfield and East Coast Bays on the US1 men's premier reserves table.
"Our goal for the season was a top five finish ... third is unreal, although it will be hard to stay there," Herbert admitted.
Next week North Force Reserves are away to East Coast Bays and have a series of tough matches following that, against Waitakere, Takapuna, Glenfield and Birkenhead.
However, Herbert has a plan for tackling each challenge and the Reserves will no doubt respond accordingly.
Meanwhile, although it was not "a vintage North Force performance", coach Bruce Plunkett was pleased with the premier side's 4-2 victory over North Shore on Saturday.
The hosts scored first, and led 2-0 at the halfway mark and while North Shore made a second half charge, North Force nailed another two goals to secure the win.
Steve Schimmel, Scott Burgess, Murray Wootten and Oso - who backed up for the premier side after his impressive efforts with the Reserves - scored a goal apiece, the win bumping the seniors up a rung on the US1 Football Premiership ladder to seventh.
East Coast Bays maintained their top spot in the standings with a 9-0 thrashing of Albany, while second-placed Waitakere had a bye.
Glenfield Rovers, in fourth place, defeated cellar dwellers Oratia 3-1, while Takapuna, in third, left Hibiscus Coast in their wake, beating them 4-0.
North Force had a bye in the Northern Women's Premier League.
Plenty in reserve to reach goal target
