Waipu cyclist Fiona Southorn is on a roll after bringing two silver medals home from the 2011 Oceania Para-Cycling Championships at the Sunshine Coast.
Southorn recently returned from Italy after a solid fourth place performance at the UCI Para-Cycling Track World Championships, but this time was racing on the road as she contested the 21km Time Trial and the 54km Road Race.
In both events, the 43-year-old New Zealand Paralympic Cycling squad member finished behind Western Australian cyclist Claire McLean.
"She is a really strong cyclist, and doesn't race track at all, only road.
"In the road time trial she started a minute behind me and passed me on the second of two laps and I had to hang on to get second," said Southorn.
The course for both events was based at Caloundra.
The course was undulating and the time-trial route was particularly challenging as it had more hills than the usual time-trial event.
In the 54km road race, McLean and a fellow Australian rider took off just 4km into the event, and Southorn did her best to keep the pair in her sights.
"They passed me and I though 'this is going to be a very long ride' but I caught up to them and managed second," she said.
It was an enjoyable event for the cyclist, who was part of a 16-strong New Zealand contingent.
"It was one of the biggest teams I've seen at an event. There were 10 of us in the Paralympic squad and six others who missed out on making the squad but still competed."
It is a busy year for Southorn, who has the 2012 London Paralympics in her sights if selected for the national team.
Next week, she heads to Sydney for a World Cup Road Race, where she will again contest the time trial event and the road race, based out at Homebush, on the course where the 2000 Sydney Olympics were staged.
After Homebush, she has a week off to catch her breath, and then will begin a long build-up for the UCI Para-Cycling Road World Championships to be held in Denmark from September 5-12.
