The games of the week in Whangarei Netball's premier grade ended up being both games involving Onerahi teams.
In Friday's first game Onerahi 1 only narrowly showed their dominance and winning 58-51 over Manawanui, who played consistently and solidly for the whole game. However, Onerahi 1's strength and experience saw them persevere and take out the win. Onerahi 1 coach Colleen Glass said Jayne Southee drove well and got some good intercepts at centre. While Manawanui managed to win the second quarter and draw the final quarter, the win went to Onerahi.
Onerahi 2 were disappointed not to come away with their first win with a narrow 55-53 loss to Takahiwai 1. They will however get a point for their efforts. Takahiwai's experience and tenacity allowed them the win over the less experienced team. Takahiwai coach Deb Harding said Hannah Edge in the defence circle did well and Shannon Tito and Amie Pooley in mid court both had strong attacking games. Onerahi 2 coach Jess Lowe felt Caitlin McLean at centre had an outstanding game and the change bringing Andrea Cameron on in the second half in defence was an effective one. For Semenoff Transport Fideliter 1 it was a night of opportunities with players returning from illness, injury and holiday for their game against Pizza Barn BBC Waipu, which Fideliter 1 won comfortably, 69-28.
Fideliter co-coaches Carol McClintock and Trina Henare showcased players as they work towards their championship round goals. Lara Tipene at wing defence for half the game then centre and goal attack respectively for the second half showed her immense talent and skill. Tina Cachemaille-Bayne at wing defence in the second half worked tirelessly in defence.
The return of player-coach Henare to goal attack combined well with the ever accurate shooter Nicky Taylor. Pizza Barn BBC Waipu coach Toni Power said it was a good team effort from the young schoolgirls and despite the scores, they are improving game by game. WGHS 1 had another confident win, this time over Old Boys, 64-33.
The WGHS 1 youthful team had a strong first quarter which established their win from start to finish. WGHS 1 coach Dee Telfer said Shannon French at centre showed some impressive skills through the court to Alanah Vinson at goal shoot who finished off superbly. Jaimee-Lee Tito was also strong in defence. Old Boys 1 coach Sharron Paa could not comment on the team's effort: the score said it all.
