Northland Cricket's new president's grade competition has been declared a success after drawing entries from four Northland clubs - Onerahi-Central, Maungakaramea, Kamo and City.
Northland Cricket boss Gary Bell said the competition had drawn a good response from a wide mixture of players.
"It seems that as well as bringing a few of our older players out of the woodwork to play, there have been a sprinkling of new players who have never played competitive cricket before."
Inaugural champions were Onerahi-Central, who beat Maungakaramea in the final at Kensington Park on Saturday.
Former Northern Districts player Barry Cooper top-scored for Onerahi with 30 from their total of 118 in 20 overs. Maungakaramea's chase started well, with a good knock of 38 by Angus Lindsay, but they came up short by 14 runs - reaching 105 for nine from their 20 overs.
The players themselves will now decide when the next competition starts.
"The idea was to kick start the competition this year and see what the players want regarding the next round of competition - whether they want to start before Christmas or wait until the New Year," Bell said.
