A hat-trick by Black Stick Laura Douglas helped Old Girls to a 3-1 victory over rivals Hikurangi at ITM Rosvall Hockey Stadium.
While the team feedback at the end of Saturday's match suggested the 2009 premier champions were not happy with their efforts, which at times lacked structure, coach Alan Lints disagreed.
"It is a tribute to the quality of the team that they have beaten Hikurangi 3-1 and they are disappointed.
"Hikurangi are always competitive, and you need to take your opportunities when you play them - it was fortunate for us, their opportunities didn't go in."
Old Girls played more cohesively than during their first hit-out of the season against Springfield last weekend, where they drew 0-0.
Meanwhile, Springfield were tested by a promising Kamo High School side. Early in the second half, Kamo's Kelly Dempster scored the first goal of the match, off a penalty corner.
Kamo defended well to restrict Springfield from scoring for most of the second half, but late in the game, finally put away two penalty corners to win 2-1.
Old Girls see more scope, despite win
