Cathrine Latu's elevation to the national squad means Northland has their newest Silver Fern but there's a catch.
While Latu should make her national debut against the Australian Diamonds in the New World Netball Series in June, her involvement in the World Netball Championships in Singapore the following month is in
question.
The Mystic goal-shooter's inclusion is subject to a Netball New Zealand (NNZ) appeal to the International Court of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS).
NNZ chief executive Raylene Castle said her organisation has appealed to the court to consider Latu's case after the International Federation of Netball Associations (IFNA) previously allowed former Silver Ferns defender Vilimaina Davu to return to the country of her birth and play for Fiji at the 2007 World Championships in Auckland.
Latu played for Samoa at the same championships, and under international netball rules must serve a four-year stand-down, but Castle said her organisation believes they have a strong case for shortening the stand-down period.
"We believe that they could have awarded Catherine the same right because she is returning to play for the country of her birth and the rules state that this gives you the right for dispensation," she said.
Latu has Samoan, Tongan, European and Nga Puhi family links but was born in Auckland and raised in Kawakawa. She attended Bay of Islands College until she left to go to Massey High School in Auckland to further her netball career.
IFNA has previously ruled that the Auckland-born player is not eligible to play for her country of birth until after the world championships and the issue will be raised at ICAS's next session.
"We expect the matter to be settled one way or another by June," Castle said.
Latu and fellow shooters Paula Griffin from the Southern Steel are the two additions to the successful Silver Ferns side which won Gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Griffin has replaced her Steel teammate Daneka Wipiiti in the fourth shooter's spot, with incumbents Irene Van Dyk and Maria Tutaia filling the other two spots.
Silver Ferns squad: Leana de Bruin (Steel), Temepara George (Mystics), Katrina Grant (Pulse), Paula Griffin (Steel), Joline Henry (Mystics), Laura Langman (Magic), Liana Leota (Steel), Cathrine Latu (Mystics), Anna Scarlett (Mystics), Maria Tutaia (Mystics), Irene van Dyk (Magic), Casey Williams (c) (Magic).
