The Northland Under-19 and
U16 golf teams met testing
conditions at the Whangamata
Golf Club over the weekend for
their first representative fix
ture of the season, the annual
Northern Region Junior Quad
rangular tournament.
The team played some good
golf despite the conditions but
struggled to make the import
ant shots count on the rain-
soaked course.
Given the quality and
strength of the three provinces
they played, it was hardly sur
prising that the team recorded
three losses, going down 5.5-2.5
against Auckland, 6.5-1.5
against Bay of Plenty and
finally 6-2 against Waikato.
Team manager Rob Pelsky
said Thomas Neylon and Kadin
Neho were the standout
players over the weekend.
Neylon playing at No4 for
the Under 19s picked up two
impressive wins, while Neho
playing No2 for the Under 16s,
had a win, a half and a tough
loss against Waikato _ losing
on the 18th hole after leading
the match for most of the
round. Other players to win
were Chase McKeown against
Auckland, Lee Neumann
against Waikato and Sean Mas
ters, who picked up a half
against Bay of Plenty.
The experience gained, par
ticularly for youngsters Zac
Wilson and Josh Barnes, will
be vital as the team prepares
for their Interprovincials in
late September.
The end result saw Waikato
take out the U16 division, while
Bay of Plenty took the U19s
and overall title.
Full results of individual
matches can be found on the
Golf Northland website,
www.golfnorthland.co.nz.
This weekend, the same jun
ior players and many other
players from around Northland
will be heading to the Citrus
Open hosted by Kerikeri Golf
Club.
This tournament doubles as
a representative trial for mas
ters, seniors, and juniors look
ing to make their respective
representative teams.
The second trial will be the
Golf Northland Strokeplay on
September 4-5, now to be
played at the Northland Golf
Club.
