Two groups of Northland women will today be recognised in Waipu for their achievements on the golf course, confirming their place as the best club golfers in New Zealand

Ngunguru Golf Club's quartet of Moira and Pauline Pullman, Lesley Ferguson, and Maggie Ackland has won the National Women's Club Teams title while Kaitaia Golf Club duo Mary Williams and Julie Yates won the Nancy McCormick Memorial Trophy.

The Ngunguru ladies won their respective titles after submitting scores from about eight club tournaments over three months to Golf New Zealand, who collated results from every club around New Zealand to find winners.

However, the Kaitaia ladies' result came from a district-wide event which was held in Northern Wairoa. Playing for the best net score, Kaitaia beat out pretty much every club around Northland and New Zealand. Not bad for a group of club players.

Golf Northland's women's president Sherrill Glen said the ladies' accomplishment is great for women's golf in Northland, whose achievements often slide under the radar. "It's great for Golf Northland to have two groups that came out national event winners," she said. "It's just purely grass roots golf; all of those events are for Northland grass roots players."

The ladies are to receive their trophies from New Zealand Golf today while the Northland Champion of Champions Event takes place at the Waipu Golf Club.

The club player wins come on the back of the Northland junior girls team producing their best ever result by a Northland team at the Junior Girls Interprovincial tournament.

Northland finished third at the event, backing up their agonising fourth place finish in 2013.

Northland's junior team was made up of Whangaroa's Brooke Kingi, Northern Wairoa's Jodi Macalister, Whangarei's Shanice Croft-Kemp, and Northland Golf Club trio Soktaera Sean, Soktaerodh Sean, and Taimana Ngakuru-Smith.
