North men's volleyball team had their first win in the Northern Zone League beating Mount Maunganui 3-2 in a thriller.
The game was held in Otara, South Auckland, with the Mount agreeing to meet their northern hosts halfway.
The game went down to the wire, with North holding on to win the last set 20-18. Sets usually go up to 15 points, but the set was tied 14 all. From there, the winner is the first team to win by two points.
"We are really stoked as it was a really close game," North men's captain Jason Woods said. "Everyone was positive and having a mixture of old guys and young guys playing for us worked in our favour," he said.
Senior players Woods and Kerry Prohl led by example, executing accurate passes and hits, while youngsters Levi Walters and CJ Wyatt stepped up for the game.
Meanwhile, the North men's B team played a tough game against Mount Maunganui's B team before losing 3-1.
The North women's side went up against the New Zealand champions from the past three years, Manukau South, and lost 3-0.
Captain Lena Milton said it was a very hard game as the side contained several tall players, who were very strong on attack.
The women's B side also went down to Manukau South's B team.
On Saturday, the men's A and B teams will go up against South Auckland, while the women play both Tauranga and South Auckland in Auckland.
