The Northland Maori rugby senior side are aware that retaining the Te Hiku O Te Ika Regional Maori Rugby Trophy won't be an easy task in the heart of Te Arawa country.
All three Northland teams - the seniors, colts and women - will play in the Northern Regional finals tomorrow but only one carries the weight of defending their title.
Northland seniors came from behind to beat the Bay 30-25 in Whangarei to win the title last year but know that at Rotorua International Stadium, the Bay of Plenty will be playing in front of a home crowd.
"We're the champions, so they're going to have to take it off us. But we won't let it go easily I can tell you that now," coach Laurie Davies said.
Davies said the Bay of Plenty backs had caused the side big problems last year and he was expecting a tough final once again.
He had not seen the Bay team play this year but expected them to be strong after they beat Counties by 40 points in their last match.
The colts team are after some pay-back after being beaten the final by Waikato last year in Whangarei.
Coach Brad Te Haara said half of the team from last year would play in their second successive final against Waikato and were after more than a runners-up medal this time around.
"The boys want their revenge and they'll take some confidence from their games so far," he said.
The colts team have progressed through to the final comparatively easily, with big wins over North Harbour and Auckland. But they hit a speed bump on Saturday at Hikurangi after leading 42-0 at half-time, they didn't add to their score in the second half.
Te Haara said that although their game had turned messy, it had given them something to target in their final training session.
"In a way I'd rather have some work-ons at training this week rather than going into the final over confident - this way we can pick up some momentum again heading into the final," he said.
The Northland women should know exactly what to do against Auckland in the final after they were beaten 0-7 last week at Hikurangi.
Auckland will be their opponents again tomorrow at Rotorua.
