Northland's Ady Ngawati has had to give up her Auckland Marathon title and also watch her record fall to Dunedin's Shireen Crumpton.
The 33-year-old knew Crumpton would be a major obstacle after the Dunedin runner beat her in the Lydiard Legend Marathon last month, but Ngawati tried hard to keep up
with the current national marathon champion during the race.
"It was a really tough race for me, I really worked hard to stay with Shireen from the start but I blew up in the last 7km - as you do in a marathon sometimes - but managed to just make my way home to finish in second," she said.
Crumpton clocked 2h 45m 51s to set a race record and finish ahead of Ngawati who finished in 2h 52m 12s with Wellington's Victoria Jackson a further 33s back to finish third.
It was well off Ngawati's personal best time of 2h 46m but not a bad effort considering it was her third marathon in the last eight weeks with the Legends.
"I was pretty happy with the time considering the last eight weeks of racing I've had, with the Legends Marathon and the Melbourne Marathon three weeks ago, was probably enough just to see my time drop off a bit - but I was rapt with the day anyway," she said.
Crumpton shaved around 20 seconds off Ngawati's PB to set the new race record.
In the men's race Gold Coast-based Dale Warrander completed a double, when he added the national men's marathon title in Auckland to the national road title he won two weeks ago.
Warrander clocked 2h, 19m 22s to head off Timaru's Sam Wreford by 34 seconds.
Christchurch's Phil Costley finished third.
