Northern Mystics coach Te Aroha Keenan said playing the hardy Adelaide Thunderbirds on their home turf this weekend was a huge mountain to climb - but her girls had their hiking boots on, ready for the Australians.
The Mystics flew out to Adelaide today after a thrilling one-goal win over the Canterbury Tactix on Monday at Trusts Stadium.
It was always going to be a close match as heading into the clash the teams had only two wins and five losses each in the ANZ Championship.
Stubborn and determined play saw the Mystics regain the lead after trailing 25-24 at the halfway mark
While Keenan was happy with the win, she said her troops could have made it easier on themselves.
"We need to work on our ball retention and while there were patches of absolute brilliance, there were also areas where we were not so good," she said.
"I was pleased with how our shooters went; although they missed shots they were in there for the whole game."
The Mystics opted to start with Jade Topia at goal shoot ahead of Cathrine Latu, with Pamela Cookey at goal attack, but Latu was introduced to the game late in the second quarter, providing a target for players to feed the ball.
Some great intercepts from the defensive duo Vili Davu and Stephanie Bond at the other end of the court were sent hurtling to the attack and the home side made a strong run in the last quarter to secure their third win this season, defeating the Tactix 47-46.
Moreover, Keenan was most impressed with how her girls dug deep for 60 minutes.
"For us, the game was about lasting 60 minutes, staying in the game instead of coming in and out of it like we have in other games," she said.
"Although we were doing that a bit in this game, we lasted the distance."
The win sends the Mystics into sixth place from ninth, nudging the northern outfit towards the top four.
"That's not our focus though (making the top four). We are just taking it day by day and game by game."
Good ball retention, 60 minutes of defence and staying "on-song in attack" were key to the Mystics having a competitive game against the third-placed Thunderbirds, who some say are the likely title contenders for 2009.
"We have had really good training sessions over the last couple of days ... we are in a good space and we are ready to do the hard work," Keenan said.
An injury-free Mystics team will face the Thunderbirds at Adelaide Distinctive Homes Dome tomorrow at 1.30pm.
Meanwhile, the Tactix, ninth on the ladder, play cellar dwellers Central Pulse tomorrow at Porirua from 2pm, the fifth placed Queensland Firebirds go up against the NSW Swifts (eighth) in Brisbane on Sunday at 2.30pm while the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, in second, face table leaders Melbourne Vixens at 7pm in Tauranga.
Finally, the seventh placed West Coast Fever play the Southern Steel in fourth at Perth's Challenge Stadium from 5pm.
NETBALL - We'll clip Adelaide's wings, says Keenan
