By Peter Thorley One Northland netballer seems to have broken the mold at the recent Netball New Zealand age group championships that finished last Friday.
North Maroon player Jess Moulds, from Ararua, was selected for the New Zealand under-19 tournament team at the national under-19 championships in Hamilton last week. The team were selected on their outstanding and consistent play throughout the tournament, by the national U21 coach and selector Yvette McCausland-Durie, Netball North's Madeline Moulds said.
Moulds senior, who is a Netball North development officer, was particularly proud of her daughter's performance.
"It's a great achievement. It's been a long time since a Northland junior made a team like this and I only hope Jess can go on from here and find success trialling for the North NPC team," she said.
Jess plays for Otamatea High School in the Rodney netball competition as well as the Baytex Panthers club in the North Harbour competition.
She was also selected to attend the New Zealand secondary schools training camp in April, with only 30 players from all over the country selected to attend.
She said it has been hard fitting in all her netball commitments, along with her head-girl duties at her school, but making the tournament team shows her efforts have paid off.
The North Maroon U19 team finished a creditable sixth place in the competition, with the contest one of the toughest ever.
Meanwhile the North U17 blue team had an impressive national U17 tournament in Wanganui finishing third behind Auckland-Waitakere and Christchurch out of a total of 38 teams.
North Blue played Wellington for third and fourth place, after going down to Christchurch 24-20 , putting on a top performance to win 28-21.
