Junior netball is proving a hit as teams from Northern Wairoa, Kerikeri and Whangarei Netball Centres entered the Whangarei Netball Centre (WNC) annual Junior Tournament.

Teams entered in school levels from years five through to eight with the year five and six section proving to be the most popular with seven teams, after one withdrew.

The remaining seven teams were split into two sections and each section played a round robin on Sunday before playing crossovers to determine the final rankings including a winner and runner-up.

With years seven and eight having six teams entered in each age group, they were run as a complete round robin with all teams playing each other to determine a winner and runner-up.

All games were 12 minutes each way with two points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss.

Fighting Flames were the winners of section one of Year 5/6 and they played Whau Valley School 1, the winners of section two, in the final to decide who would be crowned the 5/6 junior champions. Whau Valley easily won the final with the score being 14 goals to 1.

Dangerous Divas were the winners of the year seven category after winning all their games, including their game against Kaihu Juniors which they only won by 8 goals to 7.

Rangimarie were the winners of year eight, winning all their games including their game against Royal Rubies by a score of 15 goals to 7.

There was a wide range of colours on display with a variety of uniforms being worn, including a couple of purple uniforms and a pink uniform. Certainly somewhat different to the more traditional red, blue, black or green that we see so much of here in Whangarei.

WNC would like to thank ANZ for their sponsorship of some of the prizes. Overall it was a successful day and it was great to see the junior talent around in the Northland region with each of the centres represented winning one of the age groups.

WNC annual Junior Tournament:

Year 5/6 winners: Whau Valley School 1 (Whangarei).

Runner-up: Fighting Flames (Kerikeri).

Year 7 winners: Dangerous Divas (Kerikeri).

Runner-up: Kaihu Juniors (Northern Wairoa).

Year 8 winners: Rangimarie (Northern Wairoa).

Runner-up: Royal Rubies (Kerikeri.)
