Netball: Challenge champs stretched

Manawanui Collegiate Red are looking like the team to beat as they seek the ANZ Collegiate Challenge for the second year running. However, Pizza Barn BBC Waipu gave them a good game on Friday night with only two goals in it.

The first quarter was drawn and Manawanui Collegiate Red had a big second quarter to lead by six goals. BBC Waipu clawed their way back and won both the third and final quarters.

For Manawanui, Raiha Turuwhenua in defence won some good turnover ball.

Jaycee Bradley in the mid court was patient in bringing the ball down through the court on attack and Ngaire Ani Mehana in the shooting circle worked hard in and around the circle. For BBC Waipu, Jamie Newton from centre into goal defence at halftime paired up nicely with Anna Worthington and they took intercepts and created attacking opportunities.

Tivaan Doak Smith played a mature game at wing attack and she fed the circle smartly. Manawanui Collegiate Red won 21 goals to 19.

In the other Collegiate game WGHS 2 proved too strong for KHS 1. WGHS 2 started strong and led at the end of the first quarter by six goals. KHS 1 came back in the next two quarters to be behind by only two goals. However, WGHS 2 had a dominant final quarter keeping KHS 1 scoreless.

WGHS 2 won 31 goals to 20.
