Kaikohe Speedway's final meet for the 2010-11 season was almost canned before the action started thanks to heavy rain but hard work by all involved restored the track to racing condition.
All grades were well represented on Sunday, with Mike Marshall back on track after shearing a tyre a few meetings before, Max Andresen with a rebuilt engine, Dave Cortesi with a new clutch after Easter weekend and new driver Shane Mickan.
The last race meet of the season is dedicated to those who normally sit on the sideline supporting their families, especially mothers and grandparents - hence the Mothers' Day Classic and the Grandma/Grandpa trophies.
Didi Roycroft and Amanda Cortesi shared honours for best racing mum, while Elle Elliott was first in the non-racing mums.
In the Grandpa/Grandma trophy, the Production drivers have to lap the C Grade driver; Dave Cortesi in his C Grade car put up a good battle but couldn't stop Ray Dare emerging the victor.
Super/LTD drivers, the biggest field of the day, saw the Hussler (John Hussey), Mike 33 and Max 58 having trouble staying the right way round on the track.
Kaikohe Speedway is hosting its annual prizegiving at Mid North Motor Inn on June 25. Also coming up during the winter months will be a burn-out comp (date to be confirmed), along with the Bay of Islands Hot Rod Club hosting their winter games at the club on June 11.
