Whangarei Boys' High School's Harley Going brushed aside the effects of a high-speed fall on his second downhill run to win both  senior events of the 2009 Northland secondary schools' mountain bike championships.
Going finished the downhill course on his first run in a fast 1min  flat, 3sec  faster than school teammate Tyler Mortensen, who finished  5sec ahead of William Lusher in third on Tuesday.
It took Going  5min  longer to
finish his second run after he pushed the boundaries and had a spectacular fall.
But no one else  was able to take advantage of his error and he added the downhill title to the crosscountry title  he won earlier in the day.
During the morning, crosscountry racing was held on a
circuit of about 2.5km, around the lower levels of Mt Parihaka, with the seniors completing four laps and the juniors two.
It  was predominantly a single track with a short section of
forestry road.
Conditions in the morning were slippery and rewarded riders with good technical skills and fitness.
Kerikeri High School's Oliva Wadman took the honours for both crosscountry and downhill in the junior women's section.
Tauraroa Area School's Michael Lea also had a clean sweep  both  junior men's events.
The spectacular downhill racing was the highlight of the day at Mount Parihaka.
The afternoon saw the downhill racing -  two timed runs down the course - take centre stage.
The course  had dried during the morning and practice runs and proved  quicker than expected.
Even with the eventual champion spectacularly biting the dust in his second run, there were only a few minor scrapes and bruises from  falls during the day.
The event drew 36 competitors  in two divisions - senior and
junior in the men's competition, while there was only competition for junior women.
It  was organised by the Parahaki Mountain Bike Club and Bike Northland and was sponsored by Avanti Cycles.
The Regent Training Centre  provided track marshals, ferried competitors up the hill for the downhill racing and  provided a barbecue lunch.
Results: Junior: X Country (all Tauraroa Area School): Micheal Lea 21.24 1, Jonathon Kennett 21.36 2, Daniel Jepson 21.45 3; Downhill (fastest run) Lea 1.10, Alex Kennett 1.11 2, Janden Carter 1.17, Jonathon Kennett 1.17 3=.
Junior women: X Country: Oliva Wadman (KKHS) 22.39 1, Rachel Martin (KKHS) 24.06 2, Mary-Ann Woolhouse (TAS) 30.43 3. Downhill: Wadman 1.26 1, Martin 1.31 2.
Senior men: X Country : Harley Going (WBHS) 39.22 1, Cameron Dyer (WBHS) 41.30 2, Jonny Martin (KKHS) 43.46 3. Downhill: Going 1.00 1, Tyler Mortensen (WBHS) 1.03 2, William Lusher (WBHS) 1.05 3.
