Northland drivers made the most of their knowledge of the region's roads by claiming major prizes in this weekend's Rally of Whangarei.
Ben Jagger and co-driver Ben Hawkins congratulated themselves for a job well done by dousing themselves in Champagne at the Town Basin after winning the Group N 2WD class.
"It feels pretty good to get a home turf win - it doesn't get much better than this," an elated Jagger said.
The pair trailed 2008 champion Patrick Malley by 25 seconds after Saturday's eight stages.
"We had a puncture at one stage but it didn't delay us too much, I think my driving was more to blame, but today it all seemed to come together and we came home with a great result," Jagger said
Now in his second year in the championship, Jagger extended his overall lead in the class and also moved up to eighth place overall in the New Zealand Group N Driver's standings.
Whangarei's Brendon Oakden won his class in the Top Half Series on Saturday and was well-placed that evening in second overall in the Clubman's Class, behind veteran Glenn Smith.
Smith obliged by blowing his turbo on Sunday morning, handing Oakden the lead and he didn't relinquish it, finishing with his second consecutive clubman's title, after winning in 2008.
"There was a bit of drama out there and Piran Pigneguy almost caught us on the first stage [on Sunday] but, after that, we dealt to him for the rest of the day," he said.
"It was consistent hard driving that got us there and committing to these new notes."
Oakden's showdown with local rival Andrew Phillips never eventuated after Phillips left the road on the opening stage of the rally on Saturday and although he re-entered the race, he was well off the pace.
Dargaville's Carl Adnitt and co-driver Aaron Conoghan finished in third overall, three minutes behind Pigneguy.
Kerikeri's Kingsley Thompson was the highest-placed Northland driver overall, finishing ninth - his best position in the championship to date.
"Two rallies to go and we'll try and finish both of those and claw some points backs on our rivals," Thompson said.
He aims to catch Kieran Hall, who finished sixth and Matt Jansen in the overall standings. Jansen pipped Thompson and co-driver Richard Ellis for eighth place on the final stage.
Whangarei driver Kirsty Nelson finished in 11th overall - her best ever finish in her home rally. Nelson was just happy to finish after failing to complete her last hometown rallies.
She and co-driver Malcolm Peden had trouble communicating on the Saturday stages, with the car's intercom malfunctioning, but after correcting the problem they finished strongly yesterday.Peter Thorley
