Northland's boccia players set their alarms early on Saturday to get to Kensington Stadium to prepare the boccia courts for a 9am start for the 2010 Northland Mid Winter Christmas Boccia Pairs Open.
The 10 players from the Northland Boccia Club had already been hard at work by the time the majority of other contestants arrived.
With nine players turning up from Auckland, transported by the event's sponsor, Always Transport Mobility, and two players from Waitakere Boccia Club, it was soon obvious that the pairs tournament had attracted good numbers.
As it was an open tournament, anyone could enter, so after family members and friends joined in, there was a total of 33 players paired up in various classes to play.
One of the organisers, Annette Hawkins, said there had been good support for the tournament, along with the referees and officials who put in their time for the day.
"A wonderful day was had by all, with lots of laughter and fun," she said.
"Special thanks must go to Transport Mobility from Auckland and the Waitakere Boccia Club for taking part in this tournament."
The results were:
1st place, Gold, Golf -Penny Burdett (Northland) & Robyn Lillie (Northland); 2nd place, Silver, Foxtrot - Mandy Slade (Auckland) & Kayela Benseman (Northland); 3rd place, Bronze, Delta, Anthea Hurst (Auckland) & Kimberley McLean (Northland); 4th place, India, Kim Copedo (Northland) & Yung Chen (Auckland); Sport person of the day - Annette Hawkins (Northland).
