Mid Western retained their momentum in the Southern Districts Premier division with a 51-14 hammering of 2010 finalists Western Sharks at Dargaville.
They top the table on points difference, level with Hora Hora, after their backs ran rampant at Farmlands Park, running in seven tries.
Coach Simon Cauty said the size of win came as something of a surprise but after their forwards matched the powerful Sharks' pack, the rest was academic.
"We were definitely up for it yesterday, our forwards were a bit hungrier and we had the wood over their backs," he said.
The only back not to score was dynamic halfback and captain Adam Clarke, who was the spark for many of their scoring moves.
Mid Northern needed a half-time "chat" to work out how to beat Marist 24-18 at Hukerenui. The Marist loose forwards were stealing too much ball in the first spell to lead 12-3 at the break but some quick adjustment saw the 2010 champions ease past Hikurangi into third place on the table.
Kamo and Wellsford battled their way to a 23-all draw at Centennial Park with neither side consistent enough to stamp their authority on the game.
"Both sides played some very good rugby and then at other times both teams played some terrible footy and that's probably why both teams are sitting mid-table at the moment," Kamo's Gus Collins said.
He said both sides were capable of improving their positions on the table with Kamo in particular needing to improve their one-on-one tackling and if they could do that there was plenty of rugby left before the finals commenced.
The bottom of the table clash between Old Boys and Otamatea Hawks saw the Whangarei side win 31-12 but it was the Hawks' second encouraging performance in a row, giving them something to look ahead to.
"We're still taking small steps and getting those numbers down gradually so we'll keep on plugging away, our heads are still up and it's not worth looking back anyway," manager Hone Pene said.
Premier Grade Results:

Hora Hora 22 Hikurangi 16
Mid Northern 24 Marist 18
Otamatea 12 Old Boys 31
Wellsford 23 Kamo 23,
Western Sharks 14 Mid Western 51.
Premier Reserves:

Hora Hora 17 Hikurangi 15
Mid Northern 19 Marist 13 Otamatea 15 Old Boys 34
Wellsford 12 Kamo 59,
Western Sharks 53 Mid Western 12.
