Mangawhai Surf Lifesaving Club member Jess Costello dominated the women's events in the 13th annual lifeguard longboard nationals at Mangawhai Heads recently.
She won the senior and classic women's events and the women's Head Rock paddle race. The Mangawhai club hosted the nationals, which drew lifeguards from around the country. The surfers rode clean 60cm lines of swell and a great day was had by all.
Results were:
Seniors: Men, Jay Reeve, Mt Maunganui; women, Jess Costello, Mangawhai.
Juniors: Men, Matt Cockayne, Mangawhai; women, Amanda Currie, Mangawhai.
Under 14: Boys, Oliver Cameron, Mangawhai; girls, Samantha Scott, Mangawhai.
Masters: Peter Jacobs, Mt Maunganui.
Classic: Men, Dean Storey, Mangawhai; women, Jess Costello.
Head rock paddle: Men, Morgan Henderson, Mangawhai; women, Jess Costello; juniors, Kyle Backhouse-Smith, Bethells.
Best and fairest club: Mt Maunganui.
Meanwhile, the Mangawhai club will hold its 40th reunion and beach party at the Mangawhai Heads clubrooms on March 26.
The reunion is open to all all past and present club members. Admission will cost $25 a head.
