Melbourne Storm prop Adam Blair feels he has been given a new lease of life after being let loose in the back row for tonight's preliminary NRL final against old rivals Brisbane Broncos.
The Broadwood product made the switch from playing in the front row when the Storm were reshuffled after their round 24 loss to Manly - and Melbourne have won every game since.
"I started at prop and hit a bit of a slump in the middle of the year," the 23-year-old said.
"But since getting out the back, I get to use more ball skills ... it's not a hard job back there, I just need to get the ball and run," he said.
The Kiwi international said he felt at home in the role and was confident of completing tonight's  difficult task - stopping the Bronco's giant 115kg prop Dave Taylor, who like Blair has been moved wider to better utilise his skills.
Blair and his teammates had the luxury of a "cruisy" week off after smacking last year's premiers Manly 40-12 in the first week of play-offs, allowing niggly injuries and fatigued bodies to recover.
While the Storm players' bodies are rested, their minds have been in overtime as they focus on what they need to do to contain the visitors to Melbourne's Etihad Stadium.
"We watched them last week (against St George Illawarra Dragons) and they came out firing," he said.
"We're expecting the same from them again - we can't start slow, we need to match it with them from the start."
The middle of the park is shaping up to be a key area of battle in the game.
"We need to do the hard yards to stop the big guys feeding the ball to Brisbane's running backs - the likes of Karmichael Hunt and Justin Hodges, who can hurt us," Blair said.
With one game apiece in the regular NRL season, it would be fair to say the competition is shaping up to be pretty even - the Broncos won the first bout at Suncorp Stadium 16-14 and the Storm thrashed Brisbane 48-4 in round 13. Last weekend's win against minor premiers St George was Brisbane's seventh in a row, while Melbourne have won their last three clashes.
However, the Storm head into the clash as the punter's favourites to set up their fourth grandfinal appearance, and perhaps seal the premiership to add to their 2007 title.
Rivalry between the two sides runs deep - the Broncos stole Melbourne's glory defeating them in the 2006 final - when Blair first joined the franchise but he said the encounter was a distant memory.
"We are just concentrating on this year. We know if everyone does their job and the guys all put their best foot forward then we will go OK," he said.
Tonight's preliminary final will be played under the closed roof of Etihad Stadium, ideal in the wet weather forecast for Melbourne - making the contest even tighter.
It is a huge weekend of sport in Melbourne with the AFL's grandfinal between St Kilda Saints and Geelong Cats at the MCG and Blair said the team were hoping they would get a few stragglers after the AFL to fill the 55,000 capacity stadium to support the Storm.
