Athletics Whangarei's Jim Kettlewell held his place at the top of the table in the Legends' section (over 60 years) of the Xterra off-road run, held at Shakespear Park in Whangaparaoa on Sunday.
The second of Xterra's six-event series included courses over 8km, 10 km, 16 km and 20+ km, with a total of 850 runners competing.
Kettlewell, who completed the 20+ km course in 2hr 8min 13sec, found the beautiful scenery compensated for some tough running.
"It was perfect running conditions over the beautiful beach and park setting. The tide was super low, but even so there were places where we were knee deep in water getting around headlands.
"After recent rain the ground was heavy and there were places where the mud made for slow going - but the views compensated for the mud," Kettlewell said.
Other Athletics Whangarei runners competing were: 5km (Under 20 years): 35th Kieran Ruffell 47min 15 sec, 48th Elliot Ruffell 53min 2sec, 51st Oscar Ruffell 1hr 1min; 5km (Women 40-49): 26th Jan Shanks 1hr 1min 8sec;
20+ km (M 40-49): 16th Murray Ruffell 1hr 54min 22sec, (M 50-59): 10th (50-59) Max Thomas 2hr 4min 21sec (M 60+): 2nd Ian Douglas 2hr 54min 3sec.
The third race will be at Waiuku on July 3.
