Budding rugby league players pitted their skills in the inaugural Subway Rugby League Extravaganza at Maungaturoto Primary School.
Year 3-6 teams from Whau Valley Primary School, Te Kura O Otangarei, Manaia View and Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Te Rawhiti Roa contested the event in fine, dry conditions, said organiser Daniel Alcock.
Year 5-6 teams played three games over the course of the day, while the Year 3-4 teams played two each.
"They all started out strong, tackling hard and running fast," Alcock said.
The Whau Valley teams exerted their dominance in defence and in their depth of attacking options and were crowned champions in both age groups at the conclusion of the tournament.
"There was an outstanding display of sportsmanship from all participants and the feeling on the day was overwhelmingly positive," Alcock said.
It was the first time the sport had been played in the township in many years and the tournament attracted plenty of local support, he said.
