Ruakaka's Su Kay finished third against an international field of top women kitesurfers at the Cindy Mosey Island Odyssey event held in the tropical island group of Vava'u in Tonga.
Kay returned yesterday from the week-long event, with her third place in the kitesurfing boardercross division putting her on the podium behind last year's world champion female, Kristin Boese of Germany, and Poland's Ania Grzelinska, who was second, in a close final.
The 31-year-old Kay is the current New Zealand champion but her result against a strong international field still came as a surprise.
She suffered severely torn ligaments in her foot while training at Ruakaka and this has kept her off the water for the past six months.
