Chris Smith also dabbed in squash and defeated Susan Devoy's son in the 2010 Auckland C grade championship.
"When playing soccer for Bream Bay Bobcats, I used to top score as a striker every year. Had it not been for soccer, I probably wouldn't be able to kick so well in rugby," he said.
"I had to get into a soccer club but there were no scouts at that time. I then watched my brother-in-law play rugby for Waipu and that made me play as well."
He's undecided whether he'll stick with Waipu or move up to a premier side next season but hinted he was keen to get his club into the premiers.
Smith also plays for the Northland U-20 and says he's enjoyed the six games the side has played so far.
His father said Smith played his best rugby at Whangarei Boys' High School and was also a product of the School of Emerging Talent.
"He's good at anything he does, has a good attitude and is a loyal member of his Waipu club."
Smith has a range of 45 metres and kicked four penalties and two conversions in Waipu's win over Whangaruru in the second division final in July.
