The feature bout in Saturday night's Kaikohe fight night will match a fighter from the very far north against one from the country's deep south.
"Kaitaia Kid" Jason Reti will make a comeback of sorts to kickboxing against Invercargill veteran Hiriwa "Tee-man" Te Rangi in the most anticipated match-up of the evening at the Kaikohe Memorial Hall.
"It will be a good end to an amazing event. I hold Hiriwa in very high regard and that means I've been training to the best of my ability to get ready for this bout," Reti said.
"He is one of the best in the business and he's got one of the hardest jaws in the history of New Zealand kickboxing ... I think we'd arguably be the two best Maori competitors in the heavyweight division in the country."
Reti added that there are other fighters who may dispute that, but he'd try and prove it in the ring on Saturday. It is his first fight in the far north after moving to Kaitaia from Auckland two years ago.
He has fought a number of bouts in the national K1 arena and is known for his unorthodox, yet effective style of fighting.
After encountering difficulty in finding professional bouts, Reti's frustration peaked when his bout against K1 great Alexei Ignashov was cancelled, causing him to leave the Auckland "fight scene".
He now trains other kickboxers and boxers at his gym, Razor Blade Kickboxing. They plan to hold their own "fight night" later in the year.
The club has four fighters, including Reti, on the card at Kaikohe on Saturday.
The other three fighters are novices, with Trevor Marsh featuring in the heavyweight boxing "four-man" competition, Charles Ioane in the men's heavyweight kickboxing division and Jason Kupa in the 80kg class kickboxing class.
Most of the bouts will feature novice fighters and Reti is happy there has been a surge of interest in kickboxing and other martial arts recently.
"I think up north we're looking really healthy at the moment in terms of kickboxers," he said.
Reti is looking forward to the night because for the first time, he will appear in the corner of the ring as a trainer for his team.
"It's a major first for me, to enter the ring as a trainer and I get to fight on the main event as well, so that's a real bonus too," he said.
Six-time world champion Jason Suttie will also make an appearance at the event on Saturday night.
There are two women's fights scheduled, plus seven kickboxing bouts and the heavyweight boxing contest.
