Ten-year-old Whangarei karter Thomas McLean has built up an almost unassailable lead in the Top Half cadet class series, placing second overall in the Mt Wellington round of the competition over the weekend.
The driver won the final race of the third round, but was pipped on points for the overall title by Auckland driver Logan Brown.
The racing was held in wet, windy conditions, but the field finally got to use slicks when the weather cleared for the final.
Whangarei teammate Cameron Taylor also had a good weekend and was running in seventh place after the first four races, but encountered clutch problems in the final and was forced to withdraw.
McLean now has a 27-point lead going into the final round at Auckland's Rosebank Rd track this month. If he continues his recent form, McLean will win the series comfortably.
The Whangarei karter won all races in the second round at Te Puke over Queens Birthday weekend.
