Kamo Swifts started their premier season on a solid note with a one-sided 5-0 win over Onerahi in the Community Cup at Morningside Park.
The match's outcome on Saturday was largely decided before the match when North Force's friendly against FC Whangarei was called off because of heavy rain on Friday. The wash out allowed Kamo to field their North Force players and Onerahi were outclassed for much of the game
"It was good to have the North Force boys come into the side after their game was called off, they made a difference," Kamo captain Nathan Steel remarked after the game.
Kamo led 4-0 at halftime after swamping Onerahi early on. Gavin Allen converted a penalty to open their account, before Calvin Erick scored a typical goal after scooting through the defence to go one-on-one with the keeper. Kamo continued to press hard and an own goal followed, with Sammy Oso completing the first half scoring.
The second spell was still dominated by Kamo but Onerahi edged back into the game and fashioned a few chances of their own. At the other end, Onerahi keeper Ben Lee, was responsible for stemming the tide on his own making several good saves that would have beaten a lesser shot stopper.
Erick added his second from close range midway through the spell but the Onerahi defence lead by Lee and Garry Langley were more competitive - and luckier - in the second spell.
Steel, who has decided to play for Kamo rather than travel with North Force this season, said it was a bright start for the side.
"We haven't trained together much so we kept it pretty simple, everyone was showing for the ball and I think we just had too much speed for them really," he said.
"I think our dominance was really based on our defence, they kept it pretty tight and most of our goals came from backs pushing forward and creating space ... It's a good way to start the season."
Onerahi were missing player-coach Christian Reynolds - in hospital with a burst appendix - and a couple of other senior players but they kept striving for a goal right until the final whistle. Kamo made it two from two earlier in the day with a 2-0 win over FC Whangarei in the women's Community Cup match. The league and cup double winners from last season didn't have it their own way against last season's league runners-up and the two teams went to the break scoreless.
New recruit Sophie Roselt opened Kamo's account with a good goal before Katie Mullinger added a second.
