A Kamo High School girls' team defeated four Northland rivals to win the inaugural Junior High School T/12 Cricket Tournament on Monday.
In a fun day at Kensington Park in Whangarei, the Kamo High XI finished top of the table with 22 points beating teams from Mahurangi College, 12; Whangarei Girls' High School, 11; Kerikeri High School, 10; and Dargaville High School, 5.
Northland Cricket Association women's development officer Heather Deanes said T/12 was a shortened version of the game that allowed all the girls to have a bowl and a bat.
Each team played two or three games depending on the bye, with teams receiving bonus points for scoring over 30 runs, taking five wickets or bowling a team out.
"Sometimes when juniors play in the senior girls' team they get left out a little and don't get a decent go, so it was great those girls got the chance to step up and shine in this tournament," Ms Deane said.
Game 1: WGHS beat Kerikeri by six wickets; Kamo beat Dargaville by 124 runs; Game 2: Kerikeri beat Dargaville by 34 runs; Kamo beat Mahurangi College by eight wickets; Game 3: Kamo beat Kerikeri by four wickets; Mahurangi beat WGHS by 20 runs.
