It was a weekend of upsets in the Northland women's premier grade hockey competition started off by Kamo High School winning their first competition match in two seasons.
They beat Hikurangi thanks to a last-minute goal by Emma McInnes after the score was tied 1-1 for most of the game.
Sharnee Diamond scored the opening goal for KHS but Hikurangi came back to equalise and a thrilling match ensued.
Kamo manager Sandra Nink said the victory made up for a huge run of losses.
"It makes up for all the times we've looked like winning only to end up conceding a late goal and another close defeat, the girls have been playing better and better this year and deserved their victory against a full strength Hikurangi side."
In another upset Old Girls lost their first game of the year to a resurgent Maungakaramea 1-0.
Jonelle Culling scored from a goal-mouth scramble in the tenth minute to secure the win, with Old Girls spurning several chances to equalise. The best chance fell to Junior Black Stick Jacinda McLeod, who had a penalty stroke saved by Old Girls' goal-keeper Tracey Martin.
Maungakaramea 2 beat Maungakaramea 1 30-21 in the final of the premier men's sixes' competition on Saturday. Springfield 1 beat Bream Bay 2 30-12 in the playoff for third and fourth, while Mangapai 1 beat Springfield 2 27-13 and Bream Bay 1 beat Mangapai 2 49-27 in the other matches over the weekend.
