Kaitaia Squash Club are celebrating their women's team being crowned national E grade champions after defeating Eden-Epsom in the final of their Superchamps event in Tokoroa at the weekend.
It was a fantastic result for Viv Morgan, Renee Larmer, Amy Barry, Alex Jones, Michelle Hammond, Nirelle McDonald and Sue Reed, who were coached by Sue Clarke.
Several other Northland teams got in on the action at Superchamps - an event held for B grade through to F grade teams who make it through regional qualifying tournaments.
The Kamo C Grade women's team got through to the final, only to be beaten 3-2 in a thrilling decider against Rotorua's Lakes' Club. Still, the performance was quite a feat for the team, seeded 11th at the tournament in Ashburton.
At the D grade championships in Henderson, the Kamo club's second team also made nonsense of their low ranking. Ranked last in the eight-team competition, Michele Salmon, Eliesha Smith, Lisa Eggerton, Rachael Morgan and Kristin Edge finished third, easily beating Te Puke in the match for third and fourth 4-1. Panmure came out on top.
The top Kamo men's team finished seventh in the D grade championships after narrowly missing out on the semifinals; Hamilton beat Wellington's Collegians in the final.
The Dargaville men's team finished fifth in the E grade competition and Gisborne came first. In the F grade championships at Hawera, Kamo's women's team took fourth place behind eventual champions Eden-Epsom.
