A six-wicket haul and an unbeaten half ton by Whangarei Boys' High School's Henry Cooper quashed any hope of Onerahi Central improving their season this side of Christmas.
The off spinner had an outstanding day with the ball, claiming six for 32 off his 11.1 overs, when the two premier grade sides met on Saturday, at Kensington Park. Day two of the second round of the Premier Grade Two Day Club Cricket Competition was reduced to a 55-over match, after the first day was washed out last weekend.
After winning the toss, the schoolboys wisely decided to bowl on the spin-friendly wicket, and Aiden Miller broke through to remove OC's opening batsman Craig Russell for six runs. Jamie Burgess was the sole top-order batsman to get a proper start for OC, before left-arm spin bowler David Armitt dismissed him for 21 runs and then backed it up by getting Nic Breslin out for a duck.
OC skipper Craig Harrison and Courtney Keep tried to steady the innings, but Cooper was on the attack, and took their wickets for 31 and 32 runs respectively.
Cooper then dismantled the lower order, dismissing them for single figures, leaving Will Johnston stranded at the crease on six not out.
OC were restricted to 136 runs in 51.1 overs - a total worth more than it sounded on the spongy pitch, with a slow outfield.
OC made a good start with the ball when Boys' High went into bat. Adam Sylva got Bradley Kneebone out cheaply for four runs, and Johnston dismissed Jordan Antunovich for 18, but there was no stopping Boys' High professional Ben Williams and Cooper, despite some good but ultimately luckless bowling from Burgess and Breslin.
The Boys' High duo went on to make 50 not out and 58 not out respectively in 51.3 overs, passing their target by one run and winning the match with eight wickets in hand.
Maungakaramea hosted Kamo, and won the slow-paced affair comfortably with five wickets in hand, and 20 overs to spare.
The hosts won the toss and sent Kamo in, restricting their scoring and Kamo trundled along to a total of 193-6. Darren Beazley top scored from Kamo with 48 not out, while Aaron McIntosh was next with 31 not out. Jason Morgan was best with the ball for Maungakaramea, taking 3-22 off his 12 overs.
Maungakaramea's opening batsmen Joe O'Sullivan and Dean Child got down to business, knocking 72 and 78 respectively to take them close to the target.
The hosts were looking good at 140-1, and went on to chase down their target in 35 overs, losing five wickets on the way.
Meanwhile, City had an emphatic win over Kaipara, playing on the artificial Kaipara Flats wicket. Misty rain delayed the start of the game, which was then reduced to 50 overs.
City went in to bat and made 173 all out in their 50 overs, with the Darkins brothers scoring half centuries - skipper Rory made 50 while Harry knocked 56.
Matt Taylor was best with the ball for Kaipara, claiming 3-30 in 14 overs.
After dominating the competition this season, Kaipara suffered a huge blow when City went in to bowl.
City recruit fast bowler Peter Groves, a recent arrival from England, showed his skill, claiming an impressive 5-32 in his 11 overs, with fellow Englishman Richard Atkins backing him up, taking 5-12 in his 10 overs - dismissing the Kaipara for a scarcely believable 45 runs in 21 overs.
