The Northland under-18 girls hockey team will be hoping their home advantage will help them end up on top of the pile at next week's national provincial tournament in Whangarei.
The team were runner-up to Auckland in last year's final in Dunedin and Northland coach Graeme Cotton believes the squad is stronger overall this year and could go one better.
"Our bench is certainly stronger than last year, which will become more and more important by the end of the week," he said.
He said making predictions for hockey tournaments was a tough thing to do - games had to be taken one at a time.
"Things like injuries and form have to be taken into account but one thing I can tell you is we're not going to be a walkover. If someone's going to beat us, they're going to have to work pretty hard at it."
The tournament involves the country's top 20 provincial teams and will be played at ITM Rosvall Stadium, with games starting at 8am daily and going through to about 9pm during the pool stages.
The Northland side has been preparing for the tournament since early this season and has played several warm-up matches already.
"We've been playing quite good hockey so far this year and have been improving gradually, game by game," Cotton said.
He said Auckland and North Harbour were big targets for the team, after defeats by both sides in warm-up matches, but he stressed that after pool play anyone was a threat.
Cotton is very confident of making the top eight in the tournament but after that it is up to the team to control its own destiny. The two top teams from each pool of five will go through to the "sudden death" quarterfinals.
"From Thursday on it's crunch time because we'll probably meet up with North Harbour or Canterbury in the first knockout game."
Although there are certainly some stars in the squad, including international Charlotte Harrison, the strength of the team is in its overall balance.
"We play well as a unit, we have a number of very strong players but what will win the competition for us isn't individuals, it is playing well as a team," Cotton said.
