In an extremely closely fought Junior Pennants Golf Final at Waipu on Sunday, Kerikeri held out Waiotira to take the 36-hole match four games to three.
The match was all square at the lunch break with both teams winning two games, and things were still tense and tight going through nine holes with both teams leading in two games.
The first match had Kerikeri one game ahead but it looked as though Waiotira would take the other encounter in that pairing. However, a fantastic fightback from Alex Neely (pictured) saw the game halved.
This would prove to be the clincher as Kerikeri and Waiotira took one game each in the other pairing.
To reach the final Waiotira had beaten Whangarei in another closely fought zone final, two to one which finished in the dark, while Kerikeri had won their zone beating Rawene and Kaitaia.
This match was played in the best of sportsmanship, and it was great to see the parents supporting their players.
The highlight of the day was seeing all eight players walking up the final fairway together supporting the two remaining matches, and then all congratulating each other and shaking hands on the final green.
