The five-member Northland junior golf team weren't too far off the pace at the Ralph Cup competition at Mount Maunganui over the weekend. They played as well as they could have without winning a match in their tournament against three of the powerhouses of New Zealand golf.
They lost 3-2 to Bay of Plenty on Saturday morning, 4-1 to Auckland in the afternoon and on Sunday went down 3-2 to Waikato.
The results, while frustrating, left Northland selector Roy Pelsky in no doubt that the juniors were good enough to be competitive against their toughest rivals.
Number one Lee Newman was unbeaten with two wins and a half, while Mitchell Price had a win and a half.
Gavin Brown's form summed up the Northland team's weekend. Even though he shot a two-under par 70 on Saturday morning he still lost his tie. Then he shot another great score in the afternoon, a 73 - and still lost. He won his only game on Sunday with a score of 72.
