THE Kamo High School sports academy will double in size next year when it opens its doors for junior students.
The programme, which ran this year for the first time, was designed to allow the elite athletes among the school's senior students more flexibility for their sporting commitments.
The feedback from the first year of operation had been overwhelming, sports co-ordinator Marianne Budd said, giving the school the impetus it needed to expand the programme.
"The feedback has been great both from the kids and also filtering back coming from the coaches and it's amazing to see the amount of sporting talent that we have here at the school and in Northland," she said.
In 2009 the programme will continue for the seniors but Year 10 students will be also be eligible to apply.
"We're planning a Year 10 junior intake of 31 students and there are probably about another 30 students for next year's senior high performance centre as well," Budd said.
The entire girl's 1st XI soccer team will be included.
