After a first-day washout on Monday, Northland were struggling to hold on in their U14 cricket match against Hamilton.
Yesterday the Northland youngsters were 84/7 after 32 overs late in the afternoon, chasing Hamilton's first innings total of 163/8.
Fraser Seymour was Northland's stand-out bowler, with two wickets for 13 runs.
Eight teams from around the country are competing in the tournament at Kensington Park, which for many would be their first experience of representative cricket, Northland coach Owain Hopkins said.
"It's a really good experience for them and for some it's their first time away from home for a week," he said.
Today Northland were to take on Waikato Valley. The tournament, which won't have an official winner, runs until Friday.
