Sian Telfer is one of those rare athletes who has managed to excel at not one, but two sporting codes.
At 16, Telfer has represented New Zealand in basketball, and has played for several Northland netball teams.
"I love basketball but I feel I am good at netball - but my passion really is with basketball," she said.
"I reckon I can keep doing both so long as my time management is really good."
So far so good for the ambitious young woman who returned to Northland after spending last year at the TuToa Maori Sports Academy in Palmerston North, where her focus was entirely on netball and school.
Her finely tuned skills have been put to good use since. Telfer plays premier grade netball with Whangarei Girls' High School and recently returned from Auckland where she and teammate Amelia Smith were in action for the Northland Invitational side at the transtasman Secondary Schools Tournament.
Kerikeri's Julie Flintoff, Maraetia Gardner-Toi and Kaikohe's Santaj Tana were also part of the Northern team, coached by Whangarei's Jonette Chapman.
Northland were invited to enter the tournament at the last minute, when Fiji withdrew from the competition.
Telfer was named captain of the side, having impressed the selectors while playing with Netball North's under-21 side earlier this year, while Smith was selected for her form with Netball North's under-17 squad.
Northland defeated Indigenous Australia and NZ Maori, but lost against the tough Australian Secondary Schools team, NZ Secondary Schools and the Pacifica Team, to finish third overall.
Telfer said the experience of playing some physical sides and the demanding nature of the tournament was a great learning curve for the girls.
Telfer, who plays either centre or wing defence, also took part in the Lois Muir Challenge Cup, an open women's regional competition which "got her noticed" by selectors, who now know she is serious about making it on the netball scene.
It is still the off-season for basketball but when the season kicks off next weekend with the Tall Ferns Academy team contesting the women's Championship Basketball League, Telfer said fitting netball and basketball in would start to get tricky. Next year, however, the Year 12 student said her focus would be entirely on basketball.
"I received a scholarship for basketball at Santa Clara University for one year starting in August next year."
Telfer hopes to start the long slog of studying to become a sports doctor while there.
