Northland openside flanker Joel McKenty will miss tomorrow's game against Wellington - and the rest of the season - after receiving confirmation that he has broken a bone in his foot.
McKenty was being fitted out with a "moon boot" yesterday, which he will wear for at least six weeks.
"It's pretty disappointing to end your season like this, especially with games still to play but even more disappointing for me is missing out on David Holwell's 100th game," he said.
He injured his foot warming up for last week's game against Tasman but played through the pain until early in the second spell, when he was substituted. He will be replaced in the side by Matt Clutterbuck and Junior Gadolo will move on to the reserves bench.
With lock Cam Jowitt also very unlikely to be passed fit after taking a knock to the head in the same game, Matt Harrison, who has been captaining the Northland Development team, is promoted into the squad for the first time this season.
After a fairly gloomy build-up - injury wise at least - to Holwell's centenary game, coach Bryce Woodward was relieved to find that Bronson Murray's medical test results offered better news than previously expected.
"The prognosis on Bronson's injury is not as bad as first thought, the compression fracture the CT scan's picked up is actually an old one - so it's been there for a while - and while he won't be available this week, it's not outside the realms of possibility that he might be back for the two last games," the coach said.
He said McKenty will be missed but injuries are a part of the game and his absence will give other squad members opportunities.
The flanker's ability to push boundaries in the contact area has earned him a lot of turnover ball in the Air New Zealand Cup so far, and sees him hopeful that he may receive interest from Super 14 franchises in the October transfer window. However, the injury robs him of an opportunity to push that claim in the final three games of the season.
"I've been reasonably happy with my performance individually this season, it's just a shame we haven't been able to put a few more performances together as a team on the field, especially at home, that's been the most disappointing thing for me," McKenty said.
